New Ancestry.com Update now syncs with FamilySeach Family Tree

For some time now, the older version of the Ancestry.com website has synchronized both details and sources with the FamilySearch.org Family Tree. Unfortunately, for some time, the newer version of the website was lacking that feature. Now, the ability to synchronize data between the two programs has been added to the new, updated version of the Ancestry.com website. Here is a screenshot showing the link.

The link allows you to do the following:

When you compare a person on your Ancestry.com family tree with the FamilySearch.org Family Tree, you get a screen that compares both details and sources between the two programs. You can then move the information, by clicking the check boxes, from one program to the other.

You need to carefully consider which of the information is correct and make sure that the sources really apply to your ancestor or relative. The process is completed when you save the changes.

This is a big benefit to those who are keeping most of their information either on the FamilySearch.org Family Tree or on Ancestry.com.

  2. One problem though - dates and places moved over from Ancestry.com are not recognized as standard format by Family Search - even if they are in standard format!

I certainly hope patrons with NOT overwrite information which is already correct in Family Tree.

    1. Well, the answer is complicated. It is not the content of the date or place that is standardized by the Family Tree Standard Place and Date, it is the format and the format has to be "standardized" the Family Tree. So, yes, the new dates and places from Ancestry.com have to be standardized. But the problem of substituting a wrong or incorrect place from Ancestry.com is a completely separate issue.

  3. It's just so sad that our ancestor's pictures are forced into a round hole. Never mind the other issues this new version is having. Change is good, but not if it isn't going to make things better. At least that's my opinion.

  4. I am not a fan of this feature. Lots of cleanup on data brought over from ancestry.com trees. Mainly dates and places as noted above, but also duplicate people. I realize this all comes down to people taking the time to be careful and know what they are doing, but in the end it is "easy" so they don't take the time and maybe don't know what they are doing either.

  5. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is only available to those with LDS accounts. Right? I have waited to ask in hopes that things would change but my perceived experience is that it hasn't.

    1. Yes, it is an LDS Account feature and apparently not otherwise visible.
