FamilySearch Discovery Centers -- Discover Your Story

We have been hearing about FamilySearch Discovery Centers for some time now. What I do know is that FamilySearch is developing a new interactive experience called the FamilySearch Family Discovery Centers. These centers will allow guests to create, explore, and share their family stories. Coming soon to Salt Lake City, UT and Seattle, WA.

Some time ago, in a blog post, FamilySearch explained this a little bit further:
First, a bit of clarification—many of you are aware that the Family History Department will soon establish family history discovery centers in a limited number of locations worldwide. Discovery centers, which were previewed at RootsTech 2014, will feature interactive, technology-based experiences designed to immerse visitors in family history and inspire them to learn more about their ancestors. We are excited about the potential for discovery centers to reach members of the community and help them experience the joy of family history.
I guess we have to wait to see what these new Discovery Centers will do.

  1. Sounds the the FamilySearch discovery center in Park City, Utah. Been there since the Olympics as I recall. Fun, interactive, creative place to visit.

    1. Randy Hoffman here (and below).

I may be biased because I work on the project, but the Discovery Center blows Park City out of the water. :)

In the Discovery Center, you leverage your personal family tree to create a personalized experience that allows you to experience your family history in an entirely new way.

    2. Not sure if my last comment went through.

It is open by appointment (but pretty solidly booked). It will be closed to the public during RootsTech for a grand opening event and VIP tours. However, there will likely be a time scheduled for Ambassadors to tour the space. I believe a proposal has been submitted.

The current plan (which may change) is that after RootsTech, groups will need to schedule an appointment and individuals or families can come as walk-ins depending on capacity. So if a large group is already in the space, walk-ins would be turned away.

  3. Merrill White, my old boss in the SLC FH Library, has been tasked with seeing that these get developed. He is great, so expect great things. Visitors to the SLC FH Library are beginning to see major differences. Check it out when attending Roots Tech 2015

  4. Randy here again. I should add that for RootsTech attendees, the Discovery Area in the expo hall will have a few dozen computers where multiple Discovery Center experiences have been put together into a single experience. You won't get the full experience, but a really good idea of what we do.

  5. I went to the Discovery Center at the JSMB in Salt Lake City, Utah a week or so ago. It was a great experience and I want to take more people there with me. You can schedule a visit at https://familysearch.org/discoverycenter. After one hour, I had to leave because a big group was coming in. I would have stayed a little longer if I could have. Several days each month still have openings, it looks like right now.
